Grant from the People's Record
The Devonshire Collection of Period Costume has been fortunate in being awarded a grant for £1000 from the People's Record. We have used this part of this grant to aquire our first computer. We are using the computer to research Devon Sporting Heroes which will link with our projected exhibition for 2012 on dress for sport. We will then be able to upload our research onto The People's Record.
We are keen to hear of any international sports people that you may know about. We will be particularly interested in their achievements and also the clothes that they wore while competing.
If you think that you have any information that would be of interest to us please email alisonalexander@aol.com
The Window at Bogan House - a new showcase for
The window of the Bogan House Totnes, where the Devonshire Collection of Period Costume is housed, is to display the works of local textile craftspeople.
Starting with the opening of the collection's summer exhibition on 25th May, the window will feature a different display each fortnight of high quality, contemporary, locally-produced, costume related crafts, jackets, hats, baskets, bags, scarves, jewellery etc.
It will be possible to buy the crafts from the museum shop and why not visit the summer exhibition while you are there.
Come and see the beautiful dancing marionettes made David Plagerson - whose work can be seen at The Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
Costume Conversations - A fashion reminiscence project
Costume Conversations is a new project for DCPC. It is a fashion reminiscence project for which the museum has been awarded a grant under the DCC Museums small grant scheme.
From August 2008 onwards the museum education team will be interviewing and photographing local people about garments that are special to them and significant for the museum's collection.
These oral history reminiscences will be available on CD for visitors to the museum and for research purposes.
We would like people who have a garment they would like to talk about - whether about the construction or printing techniques, the textile or just a garment that meant a lot to them at a particular time in their life - to contact us.
Contact Alison Alexander on 01803 762291 or alisonalexander@aol.com to arrange for more details.
We are holding a drop in session from 11-30 to 3-00 on Tuesday 30th September 2008. Bring you garment and drop in for an interview and photograph. We hope to be able to give each interviewee a CD containing their interview and photograph.
